The decision was made following a recent change to the University of Wollongong Act 1989.
Having two Deputy Chancellors will help to cater for the increasing number of Committee responsibilities and ceremonial events requiring the presence of the Chancellor or Deputy Chancellor.
Dr Elizabeth Magassy was elected to the position of Deputy Chancellor for a two-year term effective immediately until August 18, 2019.
Dr Magassy has been in full time general practice in Wollongong since 1978 and for 10 years worked in general practice obstetrics, delivering around a thousand babies.
A Clinical Associate Professor in Graduate Medicine at UOW, she is currently chairwoman of Radio Doctor Illawarra.
Robert Ryan, the current chief executive of IMB Ltd, won’t start his two-year term as Deputy Chancellor until January 1, 2018. That is when current Deputy Chancellor Noel Cornish AM finishes up after 12 years in the role, the maximum time allowed to serve on the University Council.
There was no change right at the top though, with Jillian Broadbent AO re-appointed Chancellor for a further two-years, at the University Council elections on August 18.
UOW chief administrative officer and Council secretary Melva Crouch extended her congratulations to the Chancellor and to the newly appointed deputies.
‘’I would like to take this opportunity to warmly congratulate each of the candidates on their appointment,’’ she said.
Ms Crouch also extended her ‘’sincere thanks’’ to outgoing Deputy Chancellor Noel Cornish for ‘’his outstanding continuing contribution’’.
Mr Cornish was appointed to the University Council by the NSW Minister for Education in February 2006 and was elected to the position of Deputy Chancellor in June 2015.
Ms Broadbent became UOW’s third Chancellor on October 1, 2009, following the foundation Chancellor, the late Justice Robert Hope, who served from 1975 to 1997 and Michael Codd AC, who served from 1997 to 2009.
The University Council is the governing body of UOW and ‘’controls and manages its affairs and concerns’’.
