A suite of documents obtained by the Mercury under freedom of information includes a cabinet-in-confidence table ranking each station for a Transport Access Program (TAP) upgrade).
While the rankings are from 2014 and Transport for NSW said it is in the process of upgrading the rankings, it does offer an indication of where Unanderra sits in the list of priorities.
And it sits in 35th spot, with a final score of 31.57.
All stations above Unanderra see more commuters but none are further away from the nearest accessible station.
For Unanderra commuters, the closest accessible station is 5.4 kilometres away.
Since the list was created in 2014, six stations on a higher ranking have seen TAP upgrades begin.
This could possibly push Unanderra further up the list.
However, two stations that were ranked below Unanderra in 2014 are now in the process of seeing upgrades.
Wentworth Falls in the Blue Mountains was ranked 40th but is now getting three lifts installed.
Another Blue Mountains station – Leura – ended up in 62nd spot and is now getting a lift and other work carried out.
A TfNSW spokesman said projects may be brought forward because others are not ready to proceed, or due to factors like a station being close to a tourist destination.
The spokesman said the information in the 2014 was “out of date”.
“We regularly review rankings based on patronage data and projections,” the spokesman said.
"TAP projects are planned and delivered under a prioritisation assessment framework. It is a co-ordinated, evidence-based approach and we put every location on the table.
“We look at current and future patronage, the needs and demographics of customers using the station and whether important services such as hospitals, education facilities or other transport hubs are nearby to see where the need is greatest.”
