A first of its kind national event showcasing old motorcycles in Wollongong on the weekend attracted thousands of enthusiasts.

The AMCA Australia National Classic, Vintage and Antique Motorcycle Event has been such a success that AMCA Australia president Tony Blain said organisers were definitely looking to do it again.
“It has been fantastic for a number of reasons. Yesterday (Saturday) was pretty much capacity and today we have focused on antiques and old bikes. We are doing it for the right reasons. We are a not-for-profit and if we make any money we will invest it in next year. It will be the last weekend of August at the same venue,” he said.
The weekend included auction of more than $1 million worth of vintage motorcycles on Saturday and Mr Blain said “an Indian sold for over $100,000. I think that is a good measure of the success of the auction. We sold about half of the 20 old bikes. There are a fair few new homes of some nice old bikes.”
Mr Blain said Saturday’s crowd was mostly enthusiasts arriving on bikes and Sunday it was more families in cars. He said there were so many visitors many motels in the area were full suggesting people had come from far afield which was good the economy.
Karina Heckenberg, of Oak Flats, said she came along because she had always been into bikes and liked looking at the older ones. A white motorcycle particularly grabbed her attention. “It is very intriguing. Today has been amazing. Its a great turnout to look at some amazing bikes. The time some people have put into these machines is incredible. I would most definitely come again next year”.
Mr Blain said could not have been the success it was without the support of Wollongong City Council, Destination Wollongong and Bulli Showgrounds where it was held and about 50 volunteers.
