But it does put an end to any plans WIN TV owner Bruce Gordon had of buying the ailing network.
WIN has an affiliation deal with Channel Ten, to broadcast the network’s programs.
Media analyst and managing director of Essence Media Steve Allen said he didn’t expect anything to change for WIN.
“Apart from the ownership [of Ten] everything stays in place pretty much as it was today,” Mr Allen said.
Mr Gordon and Lachlan Murdoch had been interested in buying the network but the move by CBS puts paid to those efforts.
CBS is already a part-owner of Ten’s digital channel Eleven and had a contract to supply the network with content.
“Network Ten and CBS have enjoyed a close working relationship for nearly two decades, and now CBS will continue to provide Network Ten with access to the very best in US content,” said CBS president and CEO Armando Nunez.
However Mr Allen pointed that neither CBS programming deal – or the other Ten has with Fox – has produced any hit shows in recent years.
“So neither is the kind of contract that could dramatically alter the current ratings position of Ten,” Mr Allen said.
“The television landscape is now fought on Australian content and while it’s always been a factor there’s been a very rapid migration to Australian content being the be-all and end-all in the last three or four years.”
He added that CBS would be unlikely to replace high-rating Australian content with its own shows.
“There would be no new owner that would suddenly put an ax through what is working for the network.”
