The state government is seeking feedback until October 31 on the new short-term holiday letting Options Paper.
Potential options the government is seeking views on incorporate strata regulation, including by-laws managing visitor behavior, by-laws for compensation for adverse effects and by-laws prohibiting STHL.
Home-sharing website Stayz says new polling indicated that NSW voters support their policy recommendation of exempting regional areas from regulations that “intended to address amenity issues in strata properties in metropolitan Sydney”.
The ReachTEL survey of 1064 voters in NSW, commissioned by Stayz, indicated that only 23 per cent of respondents believe that regional and metropolitan areas should be lumped together for regulation.
Also, 53.9 per cent of respondents believe that regional holiday homes and city apartments should have different regulation, taking into account dwelling type and location.
“Short-term rental accommodation is a critical part of the tourism-accommodation mix for the Illawarra,” former federal Tourism Minister and Stayz adviser, Richard Colbeck said.
“Extra red tape and financial penalties on holiday homes will hurt the regional economy and local businesses who are dependent on having a strong tourism sector.
“Regulations designed to solve the issues of room-sharing in metropolitan Sydney will have detrimental impact on tourism, economic growth and local jobs in regions such as the Illawarra.”
