Festival organisers including Tim Allen took great delight in donating $2000 to support the ‘’wonderful work of the foundation in promoting literacy in Indigenous remote communities’’.
ILF gifts new books to remote communities, publishes stories written by community, many in first languages, and has a strong focus on early literacy, which is important in both developing literacy and language maintenance.
ILF ambassador David Malouf appreciated the support.
The celebrated writer, poet and national treasure spoke about the importance of reading in opening the world of imagination in children at the Thirroul Readers and Writers Festival late last month.
He described reading as a ‘’form of magic where we can experience other worlds and lives’’.
Indigenous Literacy Day on September 6 is a national celebration of Indigenous culture, stories and literacy with a focus on the disadvantage of remote communities.
‘’The rest of us in Australia are encouraged to raise funds and advocate for more equal access to literacy resources for remote communities,’’ a spokesperson said.
