An online betting agency running markets for 14 NSW council elections has placed Cr Bradbery as the clear favourite, paying out $1.30 for him to win. His nearest opponent, Labor’s David Brown, is priced at $4.
Handing out how-to-votes in the last hours of pre-poll on Friday afternoon, Cr Bradbery said he thought “there’s a very good chance I could be returned as Lord Mayor”.
“But as they say, it’s never over until that ballot is counted tomorrow night,” he said. “I’m not prematurely celebrating, but at the same time I’m fairly confident because I’ve worked hard for the last six years to put my profile in place, and I think people see that’s done positive things for the city.”
Liberal Michelle Blicavs said there was a consensus that Cr Bradbery would be returned as mayor, but second favourite Cr Brown said he was “taking solace in that fact that the bookies got Brexit and Trump wrong”.
For the Wollongong mayoral vote, the person who gets an absolutely majority is elected, which is the same as voting for state and federal MPs.
In 2011, Gordon Bradbery received just over 35 per cent of the first round count, and just over 63 per cent of the vote once preferences were distributed.
