One of the more common plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures is in the realm of breast augmentations and reconstructions.
We have probably all heard about implants being used in breast procedures, however, Dr Adrian Sjarif, a specialist plastic surgeon based in Wollongong and also operating in Kogarah, offers a free flap surgery to perform breast reconstruction, usually after breast cancer, where tissue is taken from the woman’s abdomen or thighs and transferred up to her chest to create a breast using microsurgical techniques.
Dr Sjarif was the first plastic surgeon to perform this surgery in Wollongong.
“I have performed this procedure at both Wollongong Private and Wollongong Public Hospitals,” Dr Sjarif said. “Only specialist plastic surgeons have the training to perform this procedure. Other surgeons including oncoplastic breast surgeons generally are not trained in this area.”
Dr Sjarif offers the full spectrum of cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery procedures but specialises in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery.
This includes breast augmentation, breast reductions and lifts, revisionary breast surgery from previous breast surgery gone wrong (sometimes due to the medical tourism trade), male breast surgery (reduction for gynaecomastia) as well as all forms of breast reconstructive surgery.
“I perform a large number of reconstructive breast procedures as well using a combination of implant-based reconstruction and free-flap reconstructions,” Dr Sjarif said. “I can also reconstruct the nipple and areola to complete the breast reconstruction process in an effort to replace that which is lost.”

For patients considering a purely cosmetic procedure, no referral is generally required.
With breast augmentations Dr Sjarif utilises the short scar techniques to minimise visible scars and he adheres to the 14-point plan of breast implant insertion to minimise infection and development of late capsular contracture.
“I offer patients sizers in the pre-operative consultation as well as access to Vectra 3D technology which allows women to ‘trial’ different implants and visualise what kind of result that they can expect using high quality 3D photography,” he said.
Put your trust in an expert surgeon
Breast procedures are complex so it’s important to find a expert in the field to complete your surgery.
Specialist plastic surgeon, Dr Adrian Sjarif completed a medical degree in 2003, before undertaking a Master of Surgery degree, then trained in plastic surgery for five years and was awarded the Fellowship of Plastic Surgeons (FRACS) in 2013.
Following his rigorous Australian training, Dr Sjarif then secured a highly sought-after clinical fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York, USA (only the second Australian to do this Fellowship) where he spent 12 months performing a high volume of reconstructive breast surgery including implants as well as microsurgical breast reconstruction.
As a specialist plastic surgeon, Dr Sjarif performs both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, as he has extensive training in both areas.
