The fire, which has burnt out vegetation in Puckeys Reserve, began about 3pm on Wednesday.
Four trucks have been brought in to fight a number of spot fires, which are located about 150 metres along a fire trail.
The location had made for difficult firefighting conditions, as there is no ready access to water in the area where the fire began.
Paramedics were called to the scene to treat one fire and rescue crew member who has sustained burns to the back of his neck.
A severe fire danger warning is in place for the Illawarra, with crews facing wind gusts of up to 43km/h and temperatures of just above 30 degrees according to the Bellambi Point weather station.
However, by about 4.20pm the fire was under control. It’s expected to smoulder into the evening.
