A parent called the Mercury to express her ‘’disappointment and anger’’ that her daughter was called out of the classroom and marched from the school grounds for the actions of a few students who were throwing water balloons.
‘’For the relieving principal [Mark Baker] to get on the loud speaker and tell all Year 12 students to get out of class and then inform them that they had to leave the school grounds immediately is a joke,’’ the parent said.
''There were security guards there as well and he told the students he would call the police and have charges laid if they tried to get back in the school grounds.
‘’This happened at 10am. Why were all students kicked out if only a few were involved in throwing balloons?
‘’What about the duty of care for the students? Many students catch a bus to get to and from school and had no way of getting home. His response ruined the end of school for these students.’’
Tim Gilmour, the assistant to the director of schools at the Catholic Education Office, said the CEO was aware of the concerns raised by some of the parents but stood by the actions of the principal.
‘’The CEO stands by any decision or action which looks to maintain the safety and well-being of our students and our staff and those visiting our schools,’’ he said.
‘’The principal made a call for the students to go home early so that they could prepare for their breakfast and graduation celebrations.’’
