Photographers Ian Laidlaw and Chris Frape have documented an array of concerts from Australian Idol star Shannon Noll to indie-rockers The Jezabels, local groups Shining Bird and Tumbleweed and many more.
The collection, Sound Exposure, is on exhibition this week.
“To me [concerts are] the pinnacle of a musician’s creativity. I know they’ve spent so much time in studios practicing … to put together 45 minutes or an hour and it’s as personal as putting on an exhibition or releasing a book,” Frape said.
“That energy is amazing and when bands put a lot of effort into their show, it’s a buzz like surfing, getting a tube or whatever – those moments when you’re completely immersed in something.”
Frape is celebrating snapping his 100th gig at the University of Wollongong Unibar and was keen to create an exhibition.
Yours and Owls jumped on board and pulled it together as part of the Wollongong Fringe, the result 200 images on show.
In Frape’s 20-year career he can only recall two tour managers that have been rude to him but the rest have been chilled personalities.
“In my earlier days – 20 years ago– things like that have happened but I’ve had a really positive experience with everyone since I moved down here [from Sydney five years ago],” he said.
“It’s not the big smoke so I think bands are a little more relaxed when they come down here.”
Other artists included in the exhibition include Tame Impala, King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, The Jezabels, Passenger, Boy & Bear, The Rubens, Royal Blood, Dune Rats, Violent Soho, Parkway Drive, Client Liaison, Bec Sandridge, Hockey Dad and Camp Cope.
Concert venues include the old Oxford Tavern, The Grand, Rad Bar, The Harp, UOW Unibar plus festivals.
The collection of photographs are also being released in book from with a limited number available at the gallery. Some copies will be gifted to the Wollongong City Library and UOW Library.
Sound Exposure on exhibition at Moving Mojntains Gallery, 193 Crown Street Mall in Wollongong.
