Elton John set to be a catalyst for Wollongong: Venue boss

THE GOVERNING body which oversees the management of WIN Stadium is determined Sir Elton John is just the beginning.

Venues NSW chair Christine McLoughlin, who was in Wollongong for the performance, said the governing body of the major stadiums in Sydney and regional NSW would “encourage whatever we can” for the stadium by the sea.

“Clearly tonight it has delivered for scale and size for one of the world’s most famous international performers,” Ms McLoughlin said.  “That’s a great start. Now it’s up to the board to see how we can help build on that.”

The former Telstra Business Woman of the Year hosted some special guests at Sunday’s concert including Chancellor of the University of Wollongong Jillian Broadbent and Australian Rugby 7s Olympic gold medallist and Wollongong local Emma Tonegato.

Ms McLoughlin paid a special tribute to those organisations who helped stage the show. “It’s a massive event for Wollongong and 40 per cent of the people attending are coming from outside the Illawarra,” Ms McLoughlin said.

“Destination Wollongong have been terrific working with the (venue) team. It’s been a  massive effort by a number of people - the promoters Chugg Entertainment in bringing Elton here, Destination NSW around the logistics and our own team on the ground in Wollongong.”

Ms McLoughlin was put at the helm of a new Venues NSW board put in place in April to oversee ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park,  Western Sydney Stadium at Parramatta, McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle, Newcastle Entertainment Centre and Showground and Wollongong’s WIN Stadium, Wollongong and WIN Sports & Entertainment Centre.
