In a statement, the RFS said more than 150 firefighters on the ground, supported by aircraft including the Large Air Tanker, are gaining the upper hand over the fire and will continue working to bring it under control as conditions ease.
“Residents in the vicinity of Filter Road, Depot Road, West Street, Bainbrigge Crescent, Shoalhaven Street and Plunkett Street should continue to monitor the situation closely,” the RFS said.
Earlier, the fires were moving in a north-easterly direction towards West Street and Shoalhaven Street, Nowra.
Telephone warnings were sent to residents.
The Illawarra RFS strike team consists of crews from Austinmer, Gerringong, Dapto, Mount Kembla, Oak Flats and Mount Keira.
