After only scrapping into the finals on the last day of the season, Port Kembla pulled off the ultimate grand final upset with a 3-1 penalty shootout win over Bulli at Crehan Park on Sunday.
Scores finished a 0-0 after 120 minutes before the match was sent to the penalty spot.
Both clubs stuttered from 12 yards until Ben Zucco stepped up and fired Port to a remarkable grand final triumph. It ensured Bulli remain win-less in grand finals since 1986 and sunk the club’s dreams of claiming a title treble. Meanwhile, it was Port’s first grand final win since 2013 and came on the back of three straight elimination final triumphs.
“It is all about momentum and belief. We peaked at the right time of the season,” Port coach Noel Spencer said.
“The last 12 weeks have been outstanding and today was no different. We played 120 minutes last week and went to 120 again today and still found a way too win the game. It’s a credit to the whole club, it’s superb.”
