Multiple fires burning in the area are currently being controlled, with crews to continue working through the day on Tuesday to strengthen containment lines.
Residents have praised the efforts of firefighters who were able to limit property damage to a small garden shed and some minor damage to guttering on a residential home.
About 80 firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW, in about 30 fire trucks, supported by a number of aircraft, worked in difficult conditions to limit the spread of the fire whilst protecting properties in the area.
About 20 hectares of bush was burnt.
UOW Shoalhaven campus reopens
It’s business as usual for UOW students and staff at the university’s Shoalhaven campus on Tuesday after it was evacuated during Monday’s fire emergency
In a statement, UOW said staff would “continue to monitor the situation and liaise with emergency services to protect the safety of students, staff and visitors”.
Resident ‘worried’ as spot fires ignite in backyard
Filter Road resident Ian Whitby’s house was in the line of fire as strong winds drove the flames through the bush opposite his property.
Filter Road was where firefighters set up their first line of property protection.
“I was a bit worried. I had some spot fires in the back yard. The firefighters have done a great job,” he said.
Residents in the vicinity of Filter Road, Depot Road, West Street, Bainbrigge Crescent, Shoalhaven and Plunkett streets should continue to monitor the situation closely.
The fire at West Nowra on Monday is being treated as arson.
Fire investigators are working with police to investigate determine the cause.

The situation on Tuesday morning
Fire crews have a 75 per cent containment line around the fire. Firefighters will bring in heavy equipment to help with the containment line.
Specialist fire investigators will be arriving today to determine how many and where the ignition points were.
The winds have dropped. The strongest wind gust recorded so far in Nowra on Tuesday was 20km/h, compared to an 80km/h gust that lashed the area during Monday afternoon’s fire fight.
