The fire – adjacent to McKell Avenue, south-east of Waterfall – began on Monday afternoon.
McKell Avenue remains closed between the eastern side of the Waterfall train station and Lady Wakehurst Drive.
The NSW Rural Fire Service says despite cool conditions on Monday night the fire continued to increase in size.
As of 7.30am on Tuesday, it had burnt 46 hectares.
“Ground crews supported by helicopters will work to keep the fire within identified containment lines, that being a surrounding walking track known as the Couranga Track,” a post on the NSW Rural Fire Service Sutherland Shire’s Facebook page said.
“There are no threats to property at this time including the nearby village of Waterfall.”
In a separate post, the Sutherland RFS said residents in the Waterfall area would see increased helicopter activity on Tuesday, with a nearby oval being used as a helipad.
Thor, the NSW RFS’s Large Air Tanker, was called in to assist ground crews on Monday.
RFS and National Parks and Wildlife Service crews are working to contain the fire.
