Bec Sandridge is returning to her old stomping ground to perform to thousands at this weekend’s Yours and Owls festival as well as spend some intimate time with a workshop group hosted by Wild Rumpus.
Wollongong’s Moving Mountains Gallery will set the scene for the session, followed by a half hour performance by the 26-year-old.
All I really want is to have a sustainable career in music, I never want to put out just one song and it to be like a one hit kind of schtick.
- Bec Sandridge
“I think you need to be more creative with how you run your music career,” Sandridge said.
“For me, I really enjoy busking and really enjoy co-writing with people and exploring different avenues of income … like for writing film and ads.”
Some of her older songs have been used in commercials while currently the songwriter has been collaborating wit the likes of Oscar Dawson from Holy Holy and Alex Lahey.
The former Stanwell Park surfer girl admits the past year has been “pretty overwhelming” as her star continues to rise and coming home this week will be a whirlwind but much needed.
“All I really want is to have a sustainable career in music, I never want to put out just one song and it to be like a one hit kind of schtick ,” Sandridge said.
“Sustainability and credibility is really important and with that I want to create songs I’m really proud of and people want to keep listening to.”
Sandridge relocated to Melbourne for her career and despite loving there is live music every night of the week in the city she still gets home-sick in between family visits.
“Mum and I are really close, sometimes it’s hard,” she said.
“The Illawarra is so beautiful, so sometimes I definitely miss the big hills and the ocean.”
This weekend the musician returns to the festival that was a “big door opener” after winning a Triple J Unearthed competition to play at the gig in 2015.
Sandridge will then return to the region in December to play at the popular family friendly festival, Fairgrounds.
After several EP’s, her debut album is also on the way and expected to be released early next year.
