But, it’s not everyday the head of your school rides through the front gate after cycling 4000km from Perth.
Shellharbour Public principal John MacDonald – affectionately known as Mr Mac to his students – and the school’s general assistant, Hugh Irving, have done just that and completed the mammoth feat this week.
The reason? To raise money for Camp Quality and to support four students at the school who have undergone, or are currently receiving, cancer treatment.
“The real heroes in this are the kids. When you get a bit of detail on the treatment they go through, they’re tough,” Mr MacDonald told the Mercury moments after his arrival on Wednesday.
Handmade signs, including one that read “Welcome back, Mr Mac – and Mr Irving” greeted the pair as they broke through a blue and red crepe paper banner at the school-gate finish line.
The pair’s efforts have, so far, raised almost $6000.
