That’s the view of neighbourhood forum convenor Valerie Hussain, who believed having a stop between North Wollongong and Thirroul made more sense than recent suggestion of Bulli.

The idea of Bulli was floated in a submission to a government inquiry because it could mean better use of the station's infrastructure.

“That’s something that has been on our wishlist,” Ms Hussain said of a Corrimal stop.

“We’ve been talking about it for quite a while. It would make far more sense to have Corrimal as an express stop rather than having Thirroul, Bulli and Austinmer as major stops.”

Just 180 metres away from the station, on Railway Street, there are two sites that could see a lot more people living there.

Village Building Company has plans to build a 60-apartment high rise on the site of the Corrimal Leagues Club.

The developer is finalising the purchase of the club, which was sold with an approved development application for 60 apartments.

Directly across the road is the old Corrimal cokeworks and the Illawarra Coke Company this week lodged a rezoning proposal that could pave the way for around 700 homes on the 18-hectare site.

With almost 800 new homes within a very short stroll to the station, Ms Hussain believed “it will strengthen our case”.

Finding space for commuters to park their cars is often a problem around train stations but Ms Hussain said that would be less of an issue at Corrimal.

“It’s got good parking around the station so you don’t have all the issues around parking,” she said.

“On the other side of the railway station you’ve got that big park on the corner, there’s also street parking and railway land that I believe could be opened up and used for more parking.”

Ms Hussain admitted the group had not taken “any formal steps” towards the creation of an express stop.

“It is something we definitely need to look at,” she said.

“There is concern about how to manage all of these extra people.”
