While the derby encounter remains in the back of his mind, Gaze said the Kings’ clash with the New Zealand Breakers on Friday night takes priority.
"We have to look at both games but will spend most of our preparation on New Zealand," Gaze said.
"It is tough.
“We have a trip over then come back and have to play Illawarra but it is tough for everyone.
"You look at this league and there are really no gimmes."
Both the Kings and the Hawks were beaten in the opening round and will be coming off long roadtrips heading into Sunday’s showdown.
Illawarra will travel across the country to play Perth Wildcats on Friday night.
Perth swept the Hawks in three games in last year’s decider.
