Without pathology, there is no medicine! The diagnosis and treatment of disease across the globe depends on the fields of pathology and laboratory medicine.
As a clinical knowledge service, pathology is fundamental to modern medical practice and healthcare.
Southern.IML Pathology Training has been successfully producing graduate pathology collectors for 12 years.
Because of the direct link between the Training Organisation and the Pathology Practice, each student has the opportunity to participate in at least 35 hours of work placement experience prior to graduation.

Every student studying HLT37215 Certificate III in Pathology Collection graduates with unquestionable venepuncture skills, having collected at least 20 successful venous samples before graduation using a number of techniques making them work ready on graduation.
‘Pathology’ includes collection centre staff, drivers, administrative staff, laboratory aids, technicians, scientists and pathologists.
“As the medical specialty is concerned with determining the cause and nature of disease, pathology is critical for the prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of many of the leading causes of disease,” a Southern.IML spokesperson said.
“Pathologists, scientists and laboratory professionals, also play a vital role in public health by defining disease patterns in populations, maintaining cancer registries, lowering rates of medical errors and infections and improving the overall quality of healthcare.
“It is estimated that pathology services provide over 70 per cent of all the diagnoses which doctors use as the basis of their clinical decisions, whilst making up just 2 per cent of global healthcare spending.”
This November marks International Pathology Day and Southern.IML Pathology does not intend on letting this opportunity pass without demonstrating to prospective students the intricate workings of a pathology laboratory.
A number of high schools and UOW students will participate in a laboratory tour, lectures and case study showcases (participation is by appointment).
Southern.IML Pathology is a local organisation established 30 years ago to provide a pathology service for the Illawarra and Shoalhaven.
