The most exciting time for any traveller is to arrive at their destination. For students who are in Year 12, your destination is very near.
After many years of primary and secondary schooling, the final exams and graduation is coming all too quickly.
Finishing off the year and achieving a good HSC result is a great accomplishment for any young person.
For Year 12 HSC students the final destination will involve completing folio’s, assessment tasks and exams.
The exams play an important role in determining your final subject study score, which in turn determines your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank).

Much of the final years of your schooling has been focused on learning new content, practising skills and then honing your exam techniques.
Being ready for these final exams is vital. There are some tips to achieve this:
Set out your goals and work out what needs to be done to achieve it. Go back over the study notes and check you know and understand each of the key terms and concepts, also that you are able to demonstrate the relevant skills.
Use your time effectively. Plan a schedule to study for the exams. Now that school holidays are over, studying during normal school hours at home and attending revision lessons are a must.
Learn your notes. Now is the time to go back over and revise your notes. Memorise the quotes for English novels, re-read literary critiques and draw mind maps to consolidate information and remember how it fits together.
Complete practice exam papers under exam conditions. Each student by now should be completing practice exam questions and papers on a weekly basis. Reading and interpreting the meaning of exam questions is vital.
Making sure you have answered the whole question instead of half the question is a skill to be practised.
Practising papers under exam conditions so that you can get the timing right will make a huge difference to how you perform on the day of the exam.
Getting feedback from your teachers to identify areas of improvement is also essential.
Finally throughout the last few weeks remember to eat well and get some regular exercise and a good night’s sleep, as this ensures that you wake up fresh and energised.
Congratulations to all Year 12 students on reaching the end of your high school studies.
It is worthwhile at this time to look back on your primary and secondary school education and reflect on how much you have grown and learnt over those years.
Take this opportunity to thank all of those who have helped you along your educational journey.
Without their support this journey would have been much harder, so show your appreciation in your own special way.
Be proud of yourself – you have made it.
