Hugh Carpenter and Mitchell Wright have been chosen as batonbearers to carry the GC2018 Queen’s Baton during its 100-day journey across the nation.
The Queen’s Baton arrives on the Gold Coast for the XXI Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony on April 4, 2018.
About 3800 batonbearers will carry the baton through every state and territory in Australia.
Mr Carpenter was nominated as a batonbearer for being an integral part of the Bulli Surf Life Saving community since 1954, both as a member and multi-faceted competitor.
The 78-year-old, who is also the foundation and still active member of Bulli Sealions Winter Swimming Club (1959), helped pioneer the acceptance of women and child members.
To this day it is a fun, family focused, charity driven club which has raised over $60,000 for the Heart and Cancer Councils since 2000, largely due to Mr Carpenter’s selfless organising.
Fellow Wollongong batonbearer Mitchell Wright, is one of Cycling NSW's most successful juniors with 23 national medals and over 35 medals/awards at state level.
Mitchell, who was born in the year 2000 has also recorded impressive overseas results and some excellent results in Seniors (U19).
Additionally, he is involved with Baimed Physiotherapy’s 100100s, raising money for the Disability Trust and attends the IAS Athletes with a Disability gym sessions, assisting the athletes with their gym programs.
Mitchell has also worked with Allkids Cambodia, assisting young children with their education and sponsors two children there.
