The refunds are part of a NSW government scheme to make the system more affordable, said Finance Minister Victor Dominello.
“Come December 1 we are moving to a lower cost green slip scheme,” Mr Dominello said.
“It’s double good news because, for the overwhelming majority of motorists, it means they will get a partial refund on what they paid in 2017 and a cheaper premium in 2018.”
Going forward, Mr Dominello said an average premium will be $120 cheaper under the new scheme.
The closer to December 1 someone renews their green slip, the greater the refund.
Taxi drivers who renew in November will get the biggest refund – $2206 – with private vehicle owners getting back $108.
Private vehicles owners who renewed in December last year will get just $6 back.
A government spokesman said the date the refunds will be sent out has not been finalised but will be sometime next year.
