More than 200 creditors could be out of pocket by up to $6 million due to a prominent local building company’s recent financial woes.
Edwards Constructions (NSW) Pty Ltd - which was building the new Bellambi Bunnings - went into administration earlier this month.
Unanderra-based Hightech Aluminium and Glass Architecture had the contract for the glazing work at the Bellambi site.
Director/owner Jennette Radisich said they had undertaken two jobs for Edwards Constructions; the newly opened Bonnyrigg Bunnings and the Bellambi site.
She said between these two projects they were now out of pocket by $300,000.
“There’s a lot of angry people,” Mrs Radisich said.
“I’m angry because I don’t want to have to close our company, I don’t want to have to lay anybody off.
“These are all guys with families.
“It’s going to affect a lot of businesses in Wollongong.
“We’ve done over 25 Bunnings and never had a problem.”
Mrs Radisich was uncertain whether they would receive any of the money owed.
“There’s quite a few contractors that have had to lay off staff already,” she said.
“We’re trying to hang in there, tried to reassure our staff. We’re not a huge company, but it’s going to hit us all.”
One of the administrators, Aaron Torline, said Edwards Constructions went into administration on October 3 “as they were experiencing cash flow issues”.
“The administrators are working with the company and making an assessment of its viability… We’re working to put together a restructure proposal,” he told the Mercury last week.
Andrew Marks, Bunnings general manager property said they were working with a number of sub-contractors to complete the remaining construction works at Bellambi.
“We value the work of our sub-contractors and will try to help them where possible once we have further information from the administrators,” he said.
The Bellambi site is due to open by the end of this month.
