Avantè, an 18-storey apartment tower is set to alter Wollongong’s skyline.
The towering commercial and office building, which will sit atop the city’s highest hill, was approved by planning authorities in 2011.
Consent was given for an 18-storey tower, worth $45 million at the time, with three levels of office space, ground floor retail and business premises, and 77 apartments spread across 15 storeys.
Despite this go-ahead, the 3 Rawson Street site remained an empty grass lot for many years.
Last year, developers revised the capital investment to $28 million.
After the lengthy wait, an off-the-plan sales campaign recently began.
When the 77 luxury apartments hit the market earlier this month, 31 per cent sold on opening sales day.
Avantè offers one, two and three-bedroom apartments.
Apartments range from $475,000 for a one-bedroom; $640,000 for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom; and $1,075,000 for a three-bedroom, two-bathroom.
Avantè is being sold through a joint partnership between Bevans Wollongong and Colliers International Wollongong.
“When couples and families walk into the purpose built sales office, they are blown away by the quality of the display apartment, from the full-sized bathroom to the detail and high quality of the finishes and inclusions,” James Ianni, director of Bevans Wollongong said.
Mr Ianni said the majority of the buyers so far were Illawarra residents.
He said much of the interest in the one-bedroom apartments were from first home buyers.
He also said a number of the buyers had earmarked their purchase for their future retirement.
Avantè offers a range of floor plans featuring open plan living and dining, gourmet kitchens with SMEG appliances and stone bench tops, hardwood timber flooring and floor to ceiling glass that affords extensive views across the Illawarra.
“I have been witness to the incredible growth of the Wollongong area and the changing needs of our ever-growing population,” Mr Ianni said.
“The Wollongong area is yet to experience anything quite like Avantè. The quality and product offering rivals any new inner-city Sydney apartment block.”
Colliers International agent Troy Gibson said the design of Avantè is “an expression of the region’s future”.
“A development of this scale is unique to Wollongong. The apartments are high-end. The quality finishes and the architecture is sophisticated and forward-thinking. It is a fresh change for this area.”
