Smyth made the final eight of the US Amateur with the type of approach shots he found on the 18th at Royal Wellington on Thursday, putting the the ball within four feet, to claim a birdie and finish one-under the card at the Asia-Pacific Amateur.
He’s still seven off the pace, behind Australia’s Shae Wools-Cobb, but tied for 11th, just three behind three players tied for second at -4, with 54 holes to play.
The winner earns a golden ticket to the US Masters at Augusta next year.
Just to make dinner taste better
- Travis Smyth
Before his stunning shot to the par-five last hole, Smyth had been busy saving par with long range birdie putts before and after the turn.
Smyth had carded birdie on the par-five second, then bogey on the par-three third.
But after an afternoon tee-off, he produced his best on the 18th. “Just to make dinner taste better,” Smyth tweeted afterwards on a video of his approach shot, setting up his birdie for a one-under 70.
Smyth is one of Australia’s brightest young talents and is set to turn professional next year, depending on his shot at making the world’s most famous tournament.
He claimed the Nothern Territory PGA last month, taking the title from Port Kembla professional Jordan Zunic.
