Having good vision is a vital part of our everyday lives - we need our eyesight to do our jobs well, to drive a car and to see the beautiful world around us.
If your vision does deteriorate, or you are diagnosed with an eye disease it can be a worrying time, but it is reassuring to know that treatment is available locally by experts in their field.
Wollongong Day Surgery, located next to Wollongong Public Hospital, performs a range of ophthalmology services including cataract extraction, occular plastics, pterygium excision, squint surgery and foreign body removal.
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who has undergone additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the eye. This is differerent to an optometrist, who is an eye doctor that examines eyes for both vision and health problems and corrects refractive errors by prescribing eye glasses and contact lenses.
There are five ophthalmologists operating at Wollongong Day Surgery they are:
- Dr Smita Agarwal, Wollongong Eye Specialists - has a special interest in refractive cataract surgery, glaucoma and anterior segment eye disease
- Dr Michelle Gajus, Illawarra Ophthalmology - has trained in all aspects of ophthalmology
- Dr Yves Kerdraon, Illawarra Ophthalmology - trained in Sydney and has additional studies specialising in the cornea as well as general eye health and cataracts, also performs corneal transplants
