Relay for Life is a 24-hour event raising funds for Cancer Council NSW.
The 2018 Relay will take place at a new venue, Tom (Scout) Willoughby Oval, Shellharbour on April 14-15.
The theme for the 2018 Relay will be ‘superheroes’.
The past several Shellharbour Relays have taken place at Albion Park Showground.
The 2017 Shellharbour Relay for Life featured a carnival theme and was held in February.
Grant Plecas, community engagement manager for Cancer Council NSW Southern Region said this represented an exciting new chapter for the event.
“It’s really exciting that after several years of success at Albion Park, we now have the luxury of being able to bring our Relay for Life to Shellharbour,” he said.
“It already has an amazing foundation of supporters across the Shellharbour community, so it’s a matter of really promoting the new and exciting venue.
“This year we plan on bringing a little bit of a different theme to the Relay, and definitely making it something special for the launch of the event at its new home.”
Since its inception in 2012, the Shellharbour Relay has raised funds for Illawarra cancer support services and prevention programs.
These include in-home help and transport to cancer treatment.
The 2017 Relay featured 741 participants and raised $89,364.46.
“The event has raised valuable funds for local services in the Shellharbour area, and local people have benefited from them,” Mr Plecas said.
“But the exciting part is all along we've had a really good group of avid supporters that have made the event the success it is.
“So we’re really looking forward to reaching out to a new group of people from the Shellharbour Village/Blackbutt/Flinders/Barrack Heights area to let them share in the excitement and be part of the event.”
Mr Plecas said participants could attend for one hour or 24 hours.
