But women - who are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to cultivating a luxuriant mo - are not excluded from participating in the event.
Movember kicks off on Wednesday and women can join the hairier sex in raising money for men's health in a range of ways, including hosting events, participating in fitness challenges or making a donation.
This year, Movember has also teamed up with the Melbourne-based Stomping Ground Brewing Co to launch a BeerMo initiative aimed at both sexes.
Drinking one of independent brewery's pale ales at a range of participating pubs and bars across Australia will help it reach its target of donating $75,000 to Movember. In Sydney, the venues include the Lansdowne Hotel in Chippendale and Frankies Pizza in the CBD.
The brainchild of Melburnian mates Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, Movember has grown exponentially since 2003 and now has campaigns in 21 countries.
The Movember Foundation has raised more than $730 million for more than 1000 men's health programs.
