If you’re heading to Illawarra Turf Club during the spring racing carnival, designer Rachel Gilbert suggests opting for dresses that are sophisticated and chic.
"Keep hemlines below the knee and choose silhouettes with sleek, simplistic lines,” she told David Jones. “Black and white is always a winning look, especially around Derby Day; but this season opt for a little pop of colour such as electric blue or antique pink."

Owner of Shell Cove’s Get Dressed Hire, Michelle Taylor said this season was all about romantic frills, romantic colours, bold stripes and effortless glam: “it’s all about the flounce!”
“Make sure you're comfortable! It's not worth having sore feet, tight dresses or heavy headpieces. Don’t end the day with your shoes in your hand, it’s never a good look, bring a pair of flats with you,” Taylor said.
Trends to carry through to Christmas parties include off-the-shoulder and one shoulder styles, according to Taylor, as well as cut-outs.
“They're the perfect way to achieve a subtly sexy vibe without looking over-the-top before dark,” she said. “[And] make sure your tan isn't orange!”
As for the men – blues, blue checks and greys are on trend, according to TK Maxx spokeswoman Clare Willenberg.
“For an edgier look opt for burgundy. We also have some great separates options that will see you through the racing and festive season, with chinos in stone, navy and black that can be paired with a pastel or paisley print blazer,” she said.
“Bow ties, pocket squares and lapel pins are a great way to add personality and style to your ensemble.
“And don’t forget headwear - the right hat can complete an outfit. Consider panama hats, driver hats and pork pie hats for extra style points.”

DRESS CODE by David Jones:
Derby Day: It’s a classy black and white affair but amp it up with graphic prints and edgy accessories.
Melbourne Cup Day: This is the biggest day of the racing carnival so don’t be afraid to get creative and bold with your outfit.
Crown Oaks Day: Go all out femme on this day with a floral frock or a pastel number.
Stakes Day: The last day of the carnival is a relatively relaxed affair so take on a casual glam approach with a maxi dress and wedges.
