Good digestive function is extremely important for maintaining your overall health and wellbeing, yet poor digestive health affects many people.
Concerning symptoms often include indigestion, nausea following eating, changes in bowel habits, bloating, pain, unexplained weight loss or bleeding.
If you experience these problems you may be referred to a gastroenterologist - these are medical doctors specialising in diseases of the digestive tract.
There are numerous investigative methods available to help gastroenterologists diagnose the problem including gastroscopy, endoscopy, enteroscopy and colonoscopy.
“Wollongong Day Surgery is the largest private provider of endoscopy services in the Illawarra,” chief executive officer Julianne Thynne said. “We are the only private facility south of Sydney that offers routine enteroscopy, which is a specialised field treating diseases of the small bowel.

“We are also one of the largest capsule endoscopy units in NSW and we perform approximately 2500 endoscopies per year.”
Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world, but the National Bowel Cancer Screening program coupled with accurate screening colonoscopy has helped to reduced this rate. Colonoscopy is used to examine the large bowel and may reveal polyps (can be a precursor to colon cancer), diverticulitis, colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.
Wollongong Day Surgery has leading gastroenterologists available for consultation and treatment. They are:
- Dr Shehan Abey: Has rooms at Wollongong Day Surgery and an interest in capsule endoscopy and enteroscopy
