Emergency services were called to Fern Street – to the area near the Gerringong Town Hall – about 11.15am, after reports a woman was hit by a Hyundai 4WD.
The vehicle was then involved in a crash with a Mitsubishi Lancer.
Ambulance paramedics treated the woman at the scene and a rescue helicopter was called, however, the woman died en-route to hospital.
Her age is not yet known.
Officers from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command attended and commenced inquiries into the crash.
Witnesses to the crash said the woman was walking her dog when she was struck.
Much of Fern Street – the main road through the small southern Illawarra town – is a 40km/h zone.
The street remained taped off by police for some time following the incident.
The two drivers weren’t injured but have been taken to Shellharbour Hospital to undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
