Rekindling has won the 2017 Melbourne Cup, just edging out Johannes Vermeer in second.

Max Dynamite crossed the line third.

The winning jockey Corey Brown, from Wingham on the NSW Mid North Coast, was excited when he spoke with Channel 7.

“I can't believe it ... I chased the ride about six weeks ago and with a light weight a big chance to get on him.

“The O'Brien team and team Williams, I can't believe it. I have been back here from overseas about nine months and slowly and surely getting back to where I was.

“It is so special, I have my family with me and the girls are old enough to come to the races and enjoy it. I am lost for words,” Brown said.

It's a one-two for Lloyd Williams, and a father-son quinella with Joseph O'Brien beating his father Aidan to the Cup.

Willy Mullins falls just short once again with Max Dynamite but it’s an Irish trifecta of sorts.

Gallante, trained by Robert Hickmott, finished last .... by 99 lengths.
