Nick Cave and Else Torp were the inspiration behind the floating flowers image titled “Passing Pulpit Rock - Distant Sky” which was judged best in show.
Now in it’s 11th year, EMSLA was relocated to the Illawarra from Coffs Harbour, closer to it’s beneficiary Dr Mal Eutick.
Curator Dr Leigh Summers said they were in talks with other Wollongong galleries about the future of the art prize in the region, but was very happy with the new home.
Fourteen Illawarra artists were among the 74 finalists, selected from more than 500 entries. The main criteria for judges being “excellence in any field of still life as long as it’s a painting”.
All finalist works will remain on exhibition at the gallery until December 9. www.emsla.com.au
