The job description on Wednesday morning – to fix a flat battery – was about as standard as it gets for Sussex Inlet NRMA mechanic Steve Hedger.
Instead, he opened the hood to discover a huge diamond python on the engine, something he had never come across in 27 years in the trade.
It was aggressive at first, and then calmed down when Steve backed away.
“It was a heart-starter morning,” he said.
“It was less than an arm’s length away, one of the biggest ones I’ve ever seen.
“I’ve been seeing them more regularly.”
Steve contacted the local snake man to collect the snake.
He’s been flat out lately, so he attended another job, and then came back later that day to start the car that had not been driven in a while.
