Head of paediatrics Dr Susie Piper said the new room marks the start of a complete redevelopment of the ward.
‘’We’re very grateful to convoy for the $250,000 donation which has allowed us to relocate and rebuild a new schoolroom,’’ she said.
‘’It’s an important room for long-stay patients as it helps to reduce the interruption to their schooling.
‘’By relocating the room we have also been able to reconfigure the ward to include a new reception and waiting area for the paediatric clinic.
‘’It also fits in with our long-term plans to completely redevelop the ward to make it a one-stop-shop for paediatric services, including inpatient care and ambulatory care.’’
Dr Piper said the Illawarra community had dug deep two decades ago to help build the current kids’ ward, and it was great the community – through convoy – was again raising funds for the hospital. ‘’We look forward to building a lasting relationship with convoy,’’ she said.
Now in its 13th year, the convoy will depart from West Cliff Colliery on Appin Rd around 8am on Sunday. It will wind down Mt Ousley through Warrawong and past Stockland Shellharbour, before finishing at the Croome Road Sporting Complex with a family fun day.
