The Australian team will play three matches in Adelaide this week, with coach Paul Gaudoin likely to hand Patterson her maiden cap in Wednesday’s first Test.
Patterson joins Gerringong’s Grace Stewart in the Australian squad and she’s excited about the prospect of representing her country in the sport she loves.
“Representing Australia in any sport is a big deal, so it means a lot to me.” Patterson said.
“I hope to use this opportunity to show I am capable of playing at the international standard.”
The 21-year-old has been involved in the Australian junior hockey set up for four years, playing a key role in the Australian team that finished third at last year’s under 21s World Cup.
She hopes to use this series as an audition for a permanent spot in the Hockeyroos squad.
The Hockeyroos will be looking to make amends for their 3-2 defeat to Japan at last week’s International Festival of Hockey.
“I think Japan is a hard team to play,” Hockeyroo Jane Claxton said.
“They work so well together, they play a team game.”
Patterson’s family will be in the stands for Wednesday’s Test at the Adelaide State Hockey Centre. Mother Leanne said Mikaela was deserving of the selection.
“We’re extremely proud of her,” Leanne said.
“It’s a reward for the hard work and effort she’s put into hockey over all these years.”
