Heyman, who was voted the LGBTI Sports Personality of the Year in March, celebrated the announcement of Australia’s support of marriage equality at an event in Canberra.
"It’s nice to finally be equal," she said.
The former Shellharbour junior said she was not at all surprised to see a strong Yes vote in the Illawarra.
"I am over the moon for the Illawarra and I had no doubt the Illawarra would be behind the campaign," Heyman said
"Personally, growing up there, I've never had any issues or bullying. It's always been a very safe environment for what I’ve seen and be through. Today is a great day."
Heyman admitted to being overcome with emotion leading up to the announcement.
“It was very emotional, just watching and waiting,” she said.
“I didn’t know what I was going to feel. I had tears and goosebumps looking around seeing so many older couples there (at the function) and it broke my heart they have had to wait so long.”
Heyman said she hoped the day was topped by the Socceroos qualifying for the World Cup against Honduras in Sydney tonight.
“Let’s get two wins today,” she laughed.
