Under current legislation, smoking is banned at all sporting facilities, playgrounds, skate parks, public swimming pools and leisure centres within the Wollongong LGA.
However a council review of the Smoke-Free (Recreation Areas) Policy has recommended it be amended to include public areas with outdoor fitness equipment, such as at Wollongong’s Lang Park.
According to a council report the policy was developed in recognition of the important role council plays in improving public health, and the natural environment.
Under the ban, smokers must stay 10 metres away from playground equipment, and four metres from building entrances.
‘’There is substantial evidence linking exposure to second-hand smoke with a range of serious and life-threatening health impacts.’’ the report stated.
‘’...The provision of smoke-free recreation areas can assist in reducing cigarette-butt litter and enhance our local environment.’’
Council staff also looked at expanding the policy to include beaches but found it would be ‘’difficult to enforce’’.
