What a massive achievement to qualify for a fourth consecutive FIFA World Cup this week.
Australia and our entire football community couldn’t be more proud.
It’s been far from an easy road to get to Russia 2018, but in the end it could hardly have come in a more convincing fashion than in our two-leg win over Honduras.
In truth, Honduras rarely seemed to trouble us in either of the two matches.
After setting the platform with a strong performance in Central America to take home the 0-0 draw, we were always in control at Stadium Australia on Wednesday night.
It was a complete domination and was everything the home fans were hoping for heading into the game.
Honduras came out with a very defensive approach and looked only to be trying to scrape a draw out of the game.
We always looked likely of ensuring that didn’t happen.
It was a terrific all-round display. The performance of Mile Jedinak in particular will live long in the memory.
He was inspirational.
His work ethic and leadership were second to none in what was truly an awesome captain’s display.
Trent Sainsbury also deserves credit for another outstanding performance in the heart of our defence while Aaron Mooy and Tom Rogic were simply superb once again.
Wollongong’s own Matt Jurman shouldn’t be forgotten either. Over the last four games, he did the region incredibly proud. It’s always great to see a Wollongong boy in the national team and he justified his selection when the national team needed him most.
Congratulations to him.
To be fair it’s an achievement the whole Socceroos squad throughout the qualifying campaign can be immensely proud of. Twenty two games is the most any nation has ever had to play to make a World Cup.
That journey didn’t come without it’s fair share of scrutiny and pressure on the team and particularly coach Ange Postecoglou.
However, with it all on the line, they were able to put it all to one side to ensure we took our place in Russia.
I couldn’t be happier and can’t wait until it all kicks-off in six months time.
