Patients and medical professionals will soon benefit from new facilities, an increased surgical schedule and expanded services when Wollongong Day Surgery undergoes redevelopment.
The Day Surgery has acquired two blocks of land fronting onto Urunga Parade in Wollongong and will be turning that land into two additional operating theatres, an expanded and more functional sterilising area, two levels of prime Wollongong medical consulting suites as well as the addition of 35 car spaces for patients.
This will give vehicular access from two street fronts to make attending the Day Surgery even easier.
“We have had an approved Development Application since 2014, but now that we are under the banner of Healthecare, they are very motivated to get the build underway as soon as the end of this year,” Wollongong Day Surgery chief executive officer Julianne Thynne said.
“The building will take approximately 12 months to complete with no interruption to our current schedule.”
Wollongong Day Surgery will be working with their surgeons before and during the build time to ascertain their needs so that when they commission the new operating theatres, they can commence new and expanded surgery types as soon as possible.

“Our surgical schedule has been at capacity for several years. We compensate for that by working three out of four Saturdays per month just to fit the patients in,” Julianne said. “Day Surgery is a very specialised field of surgery allowing large volumes of procedures to be carried out safely. Due to the fact we had no vacancies in our schedule, we were unable to attract new doctors.
“Now that we will have additional surgical sessions we can expand the services that we offer. We have had a lot of requests to expand our orthopaedic, ear, nose and throat and plastic and reconstructive surgery types.
“There has been a large unmet demand for certain types of surgery that lend themselves very well to the Day Surgery model. Many patients leave the area for surgery types that have long wait times. This is in most cases unnecessary as Wollongong can boast highly skilled medical practitioners in all surgical domains.
“Wollongong Day Surgery will be able to allow patients to access procedures quickly and easily due to the expansion of the surgical schedule and patients will not have to leave the area to have their procedures done.”
Wollongong Day Surgery is the premier Day Procedure Centre in the area and is fully accredited to the highest standards, including achieving “Met With Merit” awards from the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards Association.
The Day Surgery has contracts with all major health funds so having your surgery could cost you no out-of-pocket expenses. Very reasonable rates are also offered for patients who are not in a health fund.
