The featherweight powerhouse took down Young at will from the outset and landed a staggering 68 significant strikes to 18 in a three round shut-out win.
“It was a risk, I know it it was [Young’s] debut but he’s been one of the best around this region for a while,” Volkanovski said post-fight.
“We’ve been meaning to fight each other before we were in the UFC. I knew he was going to be tough.
“The fact he was debuting… I didn’t want to take too many risks in there. I wanted to get the finish but you can’t argue with a dominant decision.”
Young took the catch-weight bout at 150 pounds on eight days notice after slated opponents Jeremy Kennedy and Humberto Bandenay were forced to withdraw due to injury.
The run around promoted Volkanovski, who’s now riding a 13-fight win streak, to call for a ranked opponent for his next bout.
“I want some of these top guys. I’m getting a lot of matches and a lot of matches aren’t happening,” he said.
“I know people get injured but it’s just happening too much. I want a guaranteed fight so I can prepare, 8-12 weeks, for one of these top dogs.”
The victory will no doubt put Volkanovski in the frame for UFC 221 in Perth in February, a card that could be headlined by a middleweight title bout between Aussie interim champ Robert Whittaker and newly re-crowned legend Georges St Pierre.
