Dean Allison, 28, a first-time father to a five-month-old boy, is expected to require months off from work as he recovers from his injuries, which include multiple broken bones in his face.
His father Rod Allison told the Mercury a specialist had determined his son would need a stabilising metal plate inserted in one side of his face.
Mr Allison was walking with a male and female friend on Corrimal Street Saturday night when he was allegedly beaten by a group believed to include 8-10 teenagers.
A friend, Carlos Humberto Vasquez, has since set up a Gofundme page intended to support Mr Allison, his fiance Maddy Green and their child. The family was in the process of renovating their West Wollongong home when the alleged assault occurred.
“[There is a] long road ahead for him and his new family,” Mr Vasquez said.
“Being the only income, it’s going to be hard to provide for his family.”
Meantime, police have now charged five people in relation to the incident, all of them aged under 18.
The teens have been released on bail and are expected to appear in court next month.
