This Sunday, December 3 is International Day of People with Disability and the focus for The Benevolent Society, NSW’s largest provider of disability services, is to celebrate the diversity of skills, talents and abilities of people with disability and facilitate helping them reach their goals.
One of the key benchmarks for anyone is transition – transition from home to school, from primary to high school, then to the workforce.
Moving out of home into one’s own place is a key transition point, as is entering relationships, a transition in life.
Jo-Anne Hewitt, executive director of disability, The Benevolent Society, says, “These transition points can be difficult.

“Change is hard for everyone but The Benevolent Society’s case workers, therapists and other support professionals make key transitions easier for everyone in the family, smoothing the way, assisting where it’s needed.”
When it comes to starting new relationships, they can be fraught with awkwardness no matter who you are.
The Benevolent Society has partnered with My Disability Matters, a social network specifically for people with disability, to provide a key platform.
“The My Disability Matters platform in general offers great news and content, all created for people with disability,” Jo-Anne adds.
“There is content to read and share, there are chat rooms, there are groups for people who have similar interests, whether it’s cars or autism.
“People can meet people like themselves or perhaps with other disabilities.
“Additionally, there is a meeting place set aside for clients of The Benevolent Society so people can ask questions of professionals, get advice, talk to other Benevolent Society clients and feel as though there is a safe haven just for them.”

Change can be difficult for people but exciting and rewarding too. With the help of family and professionals, it can be much easier too.
