Since the roll out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in July, participants in the Illawarra have been readily awaiting the approval of their plans.
Figtree's Maree Repa and her mother and carer Vicki, expressed their excitement for the future.
“The NDIS seemed a bit scary for Maree due to her Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP) and we didn't really know what the NDIS could do for us,” Vicki said.
Maree was first diagnosed when she was 19 years old and Vicki has been by her side for the last 23 years as Maree's primary carer.
“There is only so much I can give as I am getting older,” Vicki said. “With the NDIS we will be able to future-proof everything that Maree will ever need.

“CatholicCare has been invaluable in helping us understand the NDIS and what Maree would be entitled to. We are looking at including more respite time and as I get older, for someone to come in and help me with Maree's day-to-day care.”
Maree said, “I now know I can ask for help and be certain that as new obstacles present themselves, CatholicCare will be able to communicate with the NDIS to make sure I will be looked after.
“The NDIS has everything for my future. I get to choose what I need, and I am no longer scared about what the future holds.”
