If French impressionist artists Paul Signac and Georges Seurat were to drop into the Greenacres’ Outsider Artists Exhibition they would be amazed by the artwork of Sarah Kennedy.

Sarah, who has an intellectual disability and cerebral palsy, favours the pointillism technique that the painters pioneered, using dots of paints to create beautiful landscapes.

Sarah’s father, John Kennedy, said his daughter had always found joy in expressing herself creatively and greatly looked forward to her Monday morning art class with the Greenacres’ Outsider Artists.

“When Sarah was working out her NDIS plan, she was very definite that art classes had to be included – it was the most important activity to her,” John said.

“I think the art classes are great, not only do they give Sarah the ability to express herself in a different way but they give her self-confidence.

“Like any artist, Sarah was very proud to see her work hanging in the exhibition and was thrilled when her paintings sold.”

Greenacres art therapist, Victoria Velozo, works with artists from Greenacres during weekly classes and runs a drop-in art class every Sunday. “For people with a disability, the art studio is a place where they can express what is in their hearts in a way that they often can’t in their everyday lives,” Victoria said.

“Art is such an exciting form of expression and when an artist discovers their own style and technique, like Sarah has, then it leads to these amazing artworks.”
