LAWN BOWLS
Figtree RSL Bowling Club have recognised more than 50 years of achievements by club legend Alvis 'Buzz' Filippi by naming the club's No 2 green in his honour.
Already a life-member at the club, 82-year-old Buzz was taken by surprise at the special ceremony last Saturday morning to name a green in his honour.
Deceased life member Ian Rawlings also has a green named after him and Figgy Bowlo were keen to acknowledge the lifetime of support Filippi has given the club.
Buzz laid a foundation stone at the Fraternity BC in 1952 and joined the Fraternity before transferring to Figtree Bowling Club in 1958.
He played pennant bowls for Figtree BC from 1958-2011 and has won a clean-sweep of their championship events - singles, pairs, triples and fours.
He also won the Illawarra District Triples, and was a District Singles runner-up, plus made the singles final in the prestigious South Pacific carnival.
Off the green, Buzz served as a board member at Figtree BC for almost three decades.
He is a life member of both the Fraternity and Figtree bowling clubs, with Figtree bestowing the honour in 2000.
Buzz and his wife Joyce have three children and have been married for 59 years.
