England coach Trevor Bayliss believes there is too much sledging from both sides after another day where tensions simmered between the Ashes rivals.

Paceman Stuart Broad is likely to come under scrutiny of match referee Richie Richardson for his send-off of Peter Handscomb, whom he had just dismissed leg before wicket.

It followed a fiery first day where umpire Aleem Dar stood in between James Anderson and Steve Smith, who had been trading barbs from close quarters.

England finished on 1-29 at stumps on the second day, in pursuit of Australia's declared first-innings total of 442.

Bayliss, an Australian, is well respected by the home team having worked closely with Steve Smith, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc in his four seasons with Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League.

He is not comfortable with the level of chat from the two teams.

"Personally from my point of view, probably not and that goes from both sides," Bayliss said.

"But that's the way the game is these days. I'd like to see the microphones turned down. I don't think that's necessarily a great thing for the kids at home watching."

The Jonny Bairstow headbutt saga started after David Warner's chat towards Anderson was picked up by the stump mic. Former Australian captain Michael Clarke had his "broken f----- arm" jibe at Anderson broadcast by Channel Nine, which led to him being fined by the International Cricket Council. The network later apologised.

"It adds to the spectacle when you're here playing the game but I don't think anyone necessarily needs to actually listen to what is being said," Bayliss said.

"It's grown men playing a very competitive sport and sometimes emotions boil over."

Bayliss said the trash talk was "certainly not" among England's plans.

"I think most of the time it's fairly lighthearted. Sometimes there's a lot more made of it in the press than what actually happens out in the field," Bayliss said.

"After the games and after the series the blokes are together having a beer with no hard feelings. It's just the way the game's played."

Relations between both sides plummeted after it emerged Bairstow had greeted Cameron Bancroft with a headbutt at a Perth nightspot at the start of the tour.

Both parties have said there was no malice in the action, though it led to the England team being slapped with a midnight curfew by team management.

Relations deteriorated when Smith called Anderson a hypocrite after the England paceman had accused the Australian team of being bullies.

The English camp believes the Australians have overstepped the mark with their verbal barrage, though Smith has said he is comfortable his players have not crossed the line.
