Recalled into the Test squad days after his older brother Shaun became the toast of the nation, Marsh is confident the changes he has made this year will deliver the big scores that have been missing from his Test record.

The 26-year-old is in contention to return for the third Test as selectors contemplate drafting in an extra seam bowling option to reduce the pressure on star trio Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins. Peter Handscomb would make way after a lean trot.

Marsh has struggled with the bat in his 21 Tests, averaging less than 22 with only two half-centuries from 35 innings. He admitted he lost confidence last summer when he was dumped from the Test side after a string of low scores.

He returned to the baggy green for the tour of India but lasted two Tests before having his tour cut short by a shoulder injury, which was significantly affecting his pace.

While it was his return to the bowling crease that sealed his promotion, a century a fortnight ago showed he is in form with the bat.

"I've had eight or nine months to change a few things with my batting," Marsh said. "I feel like that's working - more from the mental side, being able to deal with pressures of batting for long periods of time is something I really wanted to work on. I feel like my game is in a really good place right now."

Marsh has bowled only 22 overs this season after undergoing major shoulder surgery in March, which is a concern as he was recalled to provide relief for the frontline quicks. But Marsh says he will be able to handle the workload.

"As an all-rounder in the Australian team with our bowling attack I'm not going to be bowling 30 to 40 overs a game," Marsh said. "But I've worked hard over the last eight months to get my body in the position where I'm now playing again as an all-rounder so that's really exciting."

Marsh said he was no longer distracted by public criticism and drew heart from his brother's match-winning century in Adelaide. The siblings have become the whipping boys for Australian cricket, but Shaun has won over sceptics with his Ashes performances.

"It's been great for Shaun to be back in the Test team," Mitchell said. "He's been in great form the start of the summer. It's great to see him performing like he is.

"The thing I'm learning from Shaun, he's solely focused on his own game now. When you're playing cricket for Australia there's a lot of distractions outside the inner sanctum, but he's really concentrating hard right now. It's great to see."
